Slate Kitchen Countertops, Greenwich CT
The same properties which make natural slate a popular choice as an exterior building material also make it a perfect material for use as a kitchen countertop. Slate's inherent properties similar to those of granite make it a strong, durable material. It also has a very low absorption rate which minimizes the risk of staining. Slate has a natural matte finish. Honed slate may be oiled which gives the stone a glossy luster. While darker slates may not need to be sealed it is recommended that lighter colors such as gray be sealed.
This Greenwich CT kitchen was designed by interior designer Suzette Sherman of San Francisco. Suzette chose very a very crisp contemporary design for this very functional kitchen. Her use of natural materials such as the butcher block island and slate countertops give however have added a warmth that is often missing from contemporary kitchen design.
The cooktop run and the appliance garage as well as a third workspace have been topped with a Luna Grigio slate quarried in the North of Italy. The stone was originally finished with a brushed texture in Italy. The surface was then honed in the Refined Stone workshop which brought out the shades of gray in the stone. The home owner add the final touch of mineral oil to give the surface added protection and a lustrous look.
